LawTech and Tech Law are two commonly confused phrases. This page is designed to help explain the two terms and how they are different.

LawTech

Sometimes referred to as legal technology or legal tech, LawTech refers to the use and development of technology in the legal services industry. The Law Society LawTech Adoption Report is an excellent primer on the subject.

LegalGeek maintains a helpful map diagram of start ups operating in the LawTech space.

Tech Law

Technology law ("Tech Law") refers to regulation and private agreements concerning the use of technology. It includes the following notable sub groups:

  • Commercial Technology
  • Cyber Security
  • Data Protection
  • Digital Media
  • Outsourcing

The SCL website is a great resource for all things Tech Law (well we would say that wouldn't we).
