AI & Law Student Competition: Show Us the Future

From legal research tools and predictive analytics to smart contracts and automated compliance checks, artificial intelligence is already transforming how lawyers work. But what comes next—and how should the next generation of legal professionals shape it?

That’s where you come in.

Student Bytes and the Society for Computers and Law (SCL) are teaming up to launch an exciting new competition exploring the future of AI in legal practice. Whether you’re studying law, tech, policy, or something in between, this is your chance to share your vision—and win some brilliant prizes along the way.

The Brief

Choose one of the following prompts and respond in a digital format of your choice:

  • Design an AI tool that could help lawyers in practice
  • Case study: Find and evaluate a law firm that has successfully implemented AI
  • What will AI look like in 10 years? Imagine the future and its challenges

You can submit a:

  • Short essay
  • Video essay
  • Blog post
  • Or any other creative digital format (podcast, infographic, animation—we’re open to innovation!)

What You Could Win

We’re offering a prizes designed to boost your legal tech journey:

  • £500 worth of SCL training credits
  • A copy of the SCL 50th Anniversary Book
  • A Student Bytes x SCL merch pack (including tote bag, water bottle, pens and more)

Student Bytes Giveaway – Terms and Conditions

Eligibility
This giveaway is open to individuals who:

  • University students (undergrad or postgrad)
  • Recent graduates (within 2 years)
  • Trainees

No purchase is necessary. Employees, affiliates, or immediate family members of Student Bytes or SCL are not eligible to enter.

Prizes
The prizes for the giveaway are as follows:

  • First Prize: £500 SCL training credits (non-transferable, no cash alternative)
  • Second Prize: One copy of the SCL 50th Anniversary Book
  • Third Prize: SCL merchandise pack

Prizes are subject to availability and may be substituted with similar items of equal value at the organisers’ discretion.

Giveaway Period
Entries open on 17/06/2025 and close at 11:59 pm 08/08/2025.
Winners will be selected based on the merit of submissions and contacted via the email address used to submit their entry to Student Bytes.

Winner Notification and Prize Delivery
Winners will be notified via email. If a winner does not respond within 7 days, the prize may be forfeited and awarded to an alternate entrant.

Prizes will be delivered digitally or by post, as applicable. Delivery may be limited to certain regions — we’ll be in touch to confirm logistics.

Data and Privacy
By entering, participants consent to the use of their contact details for the purposes of administering the giveaway and contacting winners. Data will be processed in accordance with our Privacy Policy.
